Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has announced a 30-man preliminary squad for the upcoming European Championship in Germany, including some notable names and a few surprises.
Despite being sidelined with an ankle injury, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has been included in the squad, with Koeman giving him the opportunity to prove his fitness ahead of the tournament. Former captain Georginio Wijnaldum, who recently returned to the national team after a nine-month absence, has also made the cut.
Memphis Depay, who has been plagued by injuries since the 2022 World Cup, has been named in the squad, along with Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, and Cody Gakpo. Gravenberch, who has not featured for the national team in over a year, has also been included.
Notable omissions from the squad include Noa Lang, Jurrien Timber, Mats Wieffer, and Joshua Zirkzee. Koeman will have to trim the squad down to 26 players before the final announcement on May 29.
The Netherlands will face Canada and Iceland in warm-up matches before kicking off their Euro 2024 campaign against Poland on June 16. They are placed in Group D alongside France and Austria for the finals.
