Netflix users to see new symbols on films and shows this week

Viewers will see new symbols applied to all Netflix content in the UK from the end of this month.

The streaming platform has worked with regulators to create a new set of symbols which will be applied across all platforms from Thursday, October 31.

The symbols will replace the maturity ratings currently used by Netflix and will show what ages films and shows are most suitable for.

The symbols are similar to those applied to cinema and DVD versions, and have been created in conjunction with the BBFC - reports LeicestershireLive .

The British Board of Film Classification created the symbols to offer more consistent guidance about film and TV content for young people.

Netflix will be the first platform to launch them, as part of its ongoing partnership with the BBFC.

David Austin, chief executive of the BBFC, said: "Our research clearly shows a desire from the public to see the same trusted ratings they expect at the cinema, on DVD and on Blu-ray when they choose to watch material online.

"We know that it’s not just parents who want age ratings, teenagers want them too. We want to work with the industry to ensure that families are able to make the right decisions for them when watching content online."

What do the symbols look like?

Netflix will use an algorithm to classify its content using BBFC guidelines.

Along with a more streamlined look, the 12A and 12 symbols have both been made orange (rather than 12 being red).

The colours still correspond with the traffic light system used by the BBFC, with U in green, PG in yellow, 12A/12 in orange, 15 in pink and 18 in red.

Netflix will start rolling out the new age rating symbols from Thursday, 31 October. The platform aims to bring the ratings to 100% of its content, including films and series.

The BBFC says it hopes other streaming services will follow Netflix and adopt the new symbols.
