Netflix is set to create a series of shows based on Roald Dahl’s classic stories including Matilda, The BFG, The Twits and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.

The streaming giant announced it secured the rights for several of the late author’s stories after striking a deal with his estate.

Announcing the deal, the firm said the programmes would “remain faithful” to the “quintessential spirit” of Dahl’s books.

No schedule has yet been revealed, but production is set to begin in 2019.

George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Enormous Crocodile and Billy and the Minpins are among stories that will be adapted.

Not included in the deal are novels such as James and the Giant Peach, Danny the Champion of the World and Fantastic Mr Fox, it was reported.

Netflix said on Twitter: “Netflix will adapt the Roald Dahl universe of stories as a new slate of animated event series.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, and The BFG are just a few of the titles from the author's beloved and award-winning library that will be reimagined for a new generation.”
