Netflix The Crown: Elizabeth Debicki looks identical to the late Princess Diana during filming for series five

The Crown star Elizabeth Debicki has been hailed as the spitting image of the late Princess Diana as filming for season five of Netflix's The Crown resumes.

Carrying on from where Emma Corrin left off, Debicki, 31, will play the role of the Princess of Wales in the fifth season, as an older cast is brought in to portray the Royal Family in the 1990s, The Mirror reports.

The Australian actress' role will see her portray Diana until her death, which took place in August 1997.

Fans of The Crown have caught other glimpses from filming, including Debicki recreating Diana's June 1997 appearance at London's Royal Albert Hall for the Royal Gala performance of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

At the time of the casting announcement in Summer 2021, Debicki said: "Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many,

“It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.”

Prince Charles is set to be portrayed by Dominic West, best known for his appearance in The Wire.

Meanwhile, Harry Potter star Imelda Staunton will be taking on the role of The Queen.

In December, filming for The Crown had to be paused after eight crew members reportedly tested positive for Covid-19, according to The Independent.

Netflix bosses curtailed production for the show to ensure cast and crew 'safety' after a surge in cases.

“The Crown finished filming one day earlier than planned for the Christmas break following a few positive cases within the team, thus ensuring others’ safety and so that everyone on production can enjoy a festive break with their loved ones,” a statement from Netflix read.

The arrival of 2022 saw the recommencing of filming for season five, which follows Charles and Diana's bitter public divorce.

Peter Morgan, the writer of The Crown, has already written the episode that portrays Diana's death - although he has assured fans of the show that it will not show the crash in the tunnel in Paris.
