A friend of Meghan Markle's claims she became a 'scapegoat' for Buckingham Palace to prevent stories about other royals reaching the news.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have found themselves at the centre of a media storm following the release of their Netflix series, Harry and Meghan. The first instalments of the docuseries dropped on Thursday, December 8, and told the story of how the pair met and fell in love, as well as the intense media interest in their relationship.
The new teaser, which is the first not featuring Prince Harry, has been released just hours before the final three episodes of their docuseries comes to Netflix. The minute long trailer shows Meghan's lawyer Jenny Afia speaking about the situation, as pictures of Buckingham Palace are shown on-screen.
Afia tells the audience: "There was a real kind of war against Meghan, and I've certainly seen evidence that there was negative briefing from the Palace against Harry and Meghan to suit other people's agendas."
She adds: "This barrage of negative articles about the breakdown of her relationship with her father was the final straw in a campaign of nasty negative coverage of her."
Meghan's friend Lucy Fraser adds: "Meg became this scapegoat for the Palace. And so they would feed stories on her, whether they were true or not, to avoid less favourable stories being printed."
Meghan is then shown telling the camera: "You would see it play out. A story about someone in the family would pop up for a minute, and then they'd go 'we got to make that go away'. But there is real estate on a website homepage, there is real estate there on a newspaper front cover, and something has to be filled in there about someone royal."
This follows the trailer released on Monday, which saw Harry say that people were “happy to lie” to protect his brother Prince William. He added: "They were never willing to tell the truth to protect us.”
Meghan added: “I wasn’t being thrown to the wolves, I was being fed to the wolves,” while Harry refers to it as “institutional gaslighting”.
The Prince also claimed members of the royal family asked why Meghan should be protected from the media, alleging he was told it was something all royal women - including Princess Diana and Kate - have to go through.
A previous trailer showed the couple reminiscing about their special day, as they reflected on their wedding. Chatting to the interviewer, Meghan can't remember the name of their first dance song as they recall the intimate moment.
Meghan says: "I just really wanted the music to be fun", then asks Harry: "Even our first dance. Song of a thousand dances? I always get it wrong," before singing some of the lyrics like "Mashed potato, do the alligator".
Blasting the tune, Land of a Thousands Dances, by Wilson Pickett, the trailer skips through a multitude of photos from their big day including one of Meghan dancing with Elton John and another of Suits actress Abigail Spencer.
Harry and Meghan volume two will air on Netflix Thursday, December 15 at 8am.
