Netflix’s adaptation of One Day is here just in time for Valentine’s Day, and fans of David Nicholls’ best-selling book are in for an emotional rollercoaster. The series tells the story of Emma Morley (played by Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (played by Leo Woodall), two friends whose relationship evolves over two decades. Set on the same date each year, viewers get to witness the ups and downs of their complicated love story.

Playing the same character over a span of 20 years was a rare opportunity for the actors. Ambika Mod shared with Forbes contributor Dana Feldman that each episode felt like its own movie, creating a sense of isolation between them. Leo Woodall added that his character, Dexter, comes to realize the importance of true love and companionship after going through personal struggles and distractions.

One Day, originally published in 2009, has gained a massive following, selling over 5 million copies worldwide in more than 40 languages. Prior to the Netflix adaptation, the book was turned into a film in 2011 starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. David Nicholls serves as an executive producer for the series, which also features Essie Davis, Tim McInnerny, Toby Stephens, and Joely Richardson.

Now, let's dive into the ending of One Day. Warning: Spoilers ahead.

In Episode 12, set on July 15, 1999, Emma and Dexter finally get together. After spending a day in Paris, they acknowledge their past encounter and the mutual attraction that has lingered. Their relationship progresses over the following years, with plans for marriage, starting a family, and opening a café in Paris. It seems like their dreams are within reach.

However, tragedy strikes in Episode 13. Emma is involved in a fatal accident while riding her bike and passes away. This heartbreaking event mirrors the ending of the book and the 2011 film adaptation. Showrunner Nicole Taylor discussed the impact of this ending and contemplated alternative options but ultimately decided to stay true to the source material, as it holds significant thematic and structural importance.

Following Emma’s death, Dexter is consumed by grief and finds himself spiraling into old habits. However, a conversation with his father prompts him to move forward and live his life as if Emma were still present. One year later, Dex has regained control of his life, and his family and friends gather to support him. Though he will always miss Emma, he is in a better place emotionally and has re-established a positive relationship with his daughter.

The final episode, set in 2007, showcases Dex's return to the University of Edinburgh, where it all began. In a touching moment, he exchanges numbers with a new acquaintance but shares a final kiss with Emma in his mind, reliving their entire journey together.

One Day on Netflix provides an emotional exploration of love, loss, and the complexities of relationships. The series stays true to the book's ending, delivering a poignant and thought-provoking conclusion. Fans and newcomers alike can stream all 14 episodes on Netflix and experience the heart-wrenching journey of Emma and Dexter.
