Netflix's Marilyn Monroe movie Blonde starring Ana de Armas: Everything we know so far

The long-awaited fictionalised Marilyn Monroe biopic "Blonde" may finally be available to stream soon - but it will be strictly for adults.

The movie has hit the headlines recently after being given an NC-17 rating in the US for sexual content, the equivalent to an 18+ rating here, meaning that it is only for adult viewers. It is the first Netflix film to receive the certification.

The film has been in production for some time, but shooting finally commenced back in 2019, with writer/director Andrew Dominik. One of the film's producers is legendary Hollywood actor Brad Pitt, and the movie stars Knives Out and No Time To Die star Ana de Armas.

Digital Spy report Armas told The Times she struggled with getting Monroe's voice quite right, saying: "It only took me nine months of dialect coaching, and practising, and some ADR (automated dialogue replacement) sessions. It was a big torture, so exhausting. My brain was fried."

Who is in the cast of Blonde?

The film's cast not only features some big names of Hollywood as it stands today, but they play some of the most legendary figures to have ever graced the film industry. While some of the cast on IMDB appear not to have their characters listed by name, it is not hard to work out who they could be referring to in the context of Marilyn's life. The film's full cast includes:

  • Ana de Armas - Marilyn Monroe
  • Adrien Brody – The Playwright
  • Bobby Cannavale – The Ex-Athlete
  • Julianne Nicholson - Gladys
  • Caspar Phillipson – The President
  • Toby Huss - Whitey
  • David Warshovsky – Mr. Z
  • Evan Williams - Eddy
  • Xavier Samuel - Cass
  • Michael Masini - Tony Curtis

What is Blonde based upon?

While many refer to this film as a biopic, that might not be strictly true. The movie is actually based on a best-selling novel by Joyce Carol Oates, which is a fictionalised account of Marilyn Monroe's life. As such, we can probably expect the film to weave together both fact and drama.

When is Blonde out on Netflix?

At the time of writing, we don't have a specific release date for the film. However, we know that it's due to come out later this year (2022).
