Netflix's Marilyn Monroe film 'will offend everyone' and already given highest rating

The director of a new Marilyn Monroe biopic set to premiere on Netflix has said the film will 'offend everyone'.

Starring Ana de Armas as the iconic model and actor, Blonde will reportedly feature a significant amount of adult content and has already been given the highest rating NC-17 in the US.

In an interview with Vulture, director Andrew Dominik said the film's content and its portrayal of the late film star could prove controversial.

The filmmaker said: "On the one hand, I think if I'm given the choice, I'd rather go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.

"Because we know that her life was on the edge, clearly, from the way it ended. Do you want to see the warts-and-all version or do you want to see that sanitized version?"

He continued: "If it had come out a few years ago, it would have come out right when Me Too hit and it would have been an expression of all that stuff.

"We're in a time now, I think, where people are really uncertain about where any lines are.

"It's a film that definitely has a morality about it. But it swims in very ambiguous waters because I don't think it will be as cut-and-dried as people want to see it.

"There's something in it to offend everyone."

He also went on to praise Ana de Armas' performance, saying: "You have to cast somebody that you buy as Marilyn Monroe, she's amazing, that girl.

"You've got no idea, dude. You've got no idea how good Ana is. She's as good as James Gandolfini."

As well as de Armas, Blonde also features Adrian Brody and Bobby Cannavale in supporting roles.

The film does not yet have a release date but is set to arrive on Netflix later this year.

The ongoing fascination with Marilyn Monroe was no more apparent than earlier this month, when Kim Kardashian took to the Met Gala red carpet in the model's iconic gold dress worn to sing happy birthday to president John F Kennedy 60 years ago.

The reality star, 41, bleached her hair blonde too to really get fully into the stylish look as she walked hand in hand with partner Pete Davidson.

The decision split opinion however, with some Monroe experts insisting that Kardashian 'wasn't worthy' of wearing the iconic star's gown.
