An expert has warned of the danger that can come with password-sharing on the streaming service Netflix.
Earlier this week, UK customers were sent out an email advising them to check how their accounts are being used, stressing that a Netflix account should be for one household only.
Many people share a Netflix account with others who they don't live with, and the streaming service announced last year that it would begin clamping down on password sharing.
Now, Ceri Shaw, chief product officer at Scotland’s first and only SQA accredited digital skills academy CodeClan, who now offer cyber security training as part of their training portfolio, has highlighted why password sharing is a risk.
She says that there is a 'wider conversation' going on around cybersecurity that's constantly growing and evolving, thanks to new products and platforms being launched all the time.
Ceri explained: "That’s why we strongly advise against password sharing due to the risks it poses to our privacy and personal information."
According to the expert, sharing passwords can sometimes lead to our personal information being shared without our consent.
She said: "We often forget or are unaware of which platforms are linked to things we don’t want to be shared, like bank details or other personal data. Avoiding password sharing significantly reduces the risk of your information being spread without your consent."
In order to keep safe from any potential cyber attacks, Ceri advises against using the same password for all of your online accounts, changing each one up slightly so they aren't one-size-fits-all for criminals.
She explained: "You can also assure your cyber safety by varying your passwords, as more commonly used or easily predictable ones are susceptible to cyberattacks."
In an email earlier this week, Netflix advised users to review which devices were signed into their personal accounts, removing any that shouldn't have access by logging out.
The streaming giant also recommended changing your password in order to make the account more secure.
