Netflix has greenlit the limited series 'Sirens,' a female-driven dark comedy created by Molly Smith Metzler, the writer and showrunner of the hit series 'Maid.' This new series marks the first project under Metzler's multi-year overall deal with Netflix, which was announced in February 2022 following the success of 'Maid.' Starring Margaret Qualley and produced by LuckyChap, 'Maid' debuted on Netflix in October 2021, spending 14 weeks on the global Top 10 TV list and reaching the Top 10 in 93 countries. Metzler, known for her work on 'Shameless' and 'Orange Is the New Black,' received critical acclaim for 'Maid,' winning a WGA award and earning multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice award nominations.
Under her deal with Netflix, Metzler and her production company, Quiet Coyote, will develop new series and projects for the streaming platform, focusing on socially conscious content that provides opportunities for women both in front of and behind the camera. 'Sirens' is based on Metzler's play 'Elemeno Pea,' which premiered at The Juilliard School in 2011 and went on to be produced at various theaters across the country.
The series follows the story of Devon, who becomes concerned about her sister Simone's relationship with the enigmatic socialite Michaela Kell. Devon decides to intervene, leading to a dramatic confrontation at The Kells' beach estate over one explosive weekend. Described as an 'incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class,' 'Sirens' promises to captivate audiences with its intriguing storyline.
In addition to serving as showrunner and writer, Metzler will executive produce 'Sirens' alongside LuckyChap's Dani Gorin, Tom Ackerley, and Margot Robbie. The collaboration between Metzler and LuckyChap underscores the importance of building long-term relationships in the entertainment industry, as highlighted by the production company's commitment to supporting female talent and breaking barriers in storytelling.
Metzler is represented by CAA, Grandview, and McKuin Frankel, while LuckyChap is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, attorney Jeff Bernstein, and Narrative. With 'Sirens' set to join Netflix's lineup of original content, viewers can look forward to another compelling series that pushes boundaries and showcases diverse voices in the industry.
