Netflix launches £4.99 package with adverts in major subscription change

Netflix will launch its cheapest plan next month, but it will include adverts.

Making its announcement today, Netflix confirmed that on November 3, the new plan - called Basic with Adverts - will cost £4.99. This makes it the cheapest deal for the streaming service.

At launch adverts will be 15 or 30 seconds in length and will be played before and during series and films. Netflix confirmed that a wide variety of TV series and films as well as personalised viewing experience will remain the same, but you will not be able to download content.

Now, there will be an average of four to five minutes of adverts per hour and a limited number of films and TV series "won't be available due to licensing restrictions". According to the moneysavingexpert.com, these changes will be introduced from 4pm on November 3.

Taking to social media, Netflix UK wrote: "Enjoy your Netflix experience exactly as it is today? Great! Nothing about the way you watch Netflix is going to change. From November, Netflix will also be available from £4.99 in the UK. Basic with Ads, Netflix’s new lower priced ad-supported plan. A plan for every fan!"

Earlier this year, the ECHO reported on an increase to the Netflix prices for new and current subscriptions. But now, if you choose not to have adverts, the cheapest deal will be £6.99. Netflix standard will cost £10.99 and Netflix Premium will be £15.99.

Netflix said: "In short, Basic with Adverts is everything people love about Netflix, at a lower price, with a few adverts in-between.

"Basic with Adverts also represents an exciting opportunity for advertisers – the chance to reach a diverse audience, including younger viewers who increasingly don’t watch linear TV, in a premium environment with a seamless, high-resolution adverts experience."
