Netflix is introducing new age rating symbols and this is when they will appear

Netflix is preparing to launch brand new age rating symbols across the platform.

The streaming giant will display new digital age rating symbols, which are being launched by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

For the first time, the symbols have been redesigned for online streaming platforms.

Netflix currently displays maturity ratings, but says the new symbols will help young people decide what’s right for them to watch.

So what do the symbols look like - and when will they launch?

What are the new Netflix age ratings?

The BBFC aims to offer young people better and more consistent guidance about film and TV content with the new symbols.

Netflix will be the first platform to launch them as part of its ongoing partnership with the organisation.

David Austin, chief executive of the BBFC, said: "Our research clearly shows a desire from the public to see the same trusted ratings they expect at the cinema, on DVD and on Blu-ray when they choose to watch material online.

"We know that it’s not just parents who want age ratings, teenagers want them too. We want to work with the industry to ensure that families are able to make the right decisions for them when watching content online."

What do the symbols look like?

Netflix will use an algorithm to classify its content using BBFC guidelines.

However, the symbols look slightly different to the ones currently used by the organisation.

Along with a more streamlined look, the most notable change is that the 12A and 12 symbols have both been made orange (rather than 12 being red).

The colours still correspond with the traffic light system used by the BBFC, with U in green, PG in yellow, 12A/12 in orange, 15 in pink and 18 in red.

When do the symbols come into force?

Netflix will start rolling out the new age rating symbols from Thursday, 31 October.

The platform aims to bring the ratings to 100% of its content, including films and series.

The BBFC says it hopes other streaming services will follow Netflix and adopt the new symbols.
