Netflix has given the green light to a new project from the creator and showrunner of 'Maid,' Molly Smith Metzler. The upcoming limited series, titled 'Sirens,' is set to be a dark comedy that delves into themes of women, power, and class.
'Sirens' is a collaboration between Metzler and Margot Robbie's LuckyChap banner, the production company behind 'Maid.' Robbie, known for her role in 'Barbie,' serves as an executive producer for the series.
The inspiration for 'Sirens' stems from Metzler's play 'Elemeno Pea,' which she penned during her time as a student at Juilliard. The narrative revolves around two sisters, Devon and Simone, with Devon growing concerned about Simone's troubling relationship with her affluent boss, Michaela Kell.
Described as a darkly humorous exploration, 'Sirens' portrays Michaela's opulent yet cult-like lifestyle as a seductive trap for Simone. Devon takes it upon herself to intervene, leading to a dramatic showdown at The Kells' extravagant beach estate over a single intense weekend.
The series marks the first project to emerge from Metzler's overall deal with Netflix following the success of 'Maid.' Based on Stephanie Land's memoir, 'Maid' became one of the most-watched original streaming shows in 2021 and garnered three Emmy nominations, including one for Metzler's writing.
In addition to Metzler, the executive producers for 'Sirens' include Margot Robbie, Dani Gorin, and Tom Ackerley from LuckyChap. Metzler's production company, Quiet Coyote, will also be involved in the series' production.
'Sirens' promises to be an incisive, provocative, and entertaining exploration of the dynamics of power, femininity, and social hierarchy. With a talented team behind the scenes and a compelling premise, the series is poised to captivate audiences with its unique blend of humor and drama.
