Fans have been left gutted after Netflix announced that series four of Sex Education will be the last ever. It brings to an end the wildly popular show starring the likes of Ncuti Gatwa, Asa Butterfield, Mimi Keene, Gillian Anderson and Emma Mackey.
Show creator Laurie Nunn told Netflix's Tudum that the fourth series wasn't originally set to be the last, but things have come to a natural end. Recalling when Nunn and the writers began scripting the season, she said: "During that process it just started to feel very clear that the stories were coming to an end, the characters were being left in a place that I felt really good about it.
"I felt happy for them, and I felt like I've said everything that I want to say with these characters at this time." In reaction to the bittersweet news that Sex Education will be airing its fourth and final season, fans took to social media to react.
Posaidwhat tweeted: "YES!!! been dying to hear about Season 4 of Sex Education and finally have a release date. I'm so ready at this. Gutted it's the last seasons but really looking forward to this!!
Paperboatafloat added: "It makes me sad that this series will be ending. I've kinda grown with this series, in more ways than one. But the finale will probably also bring a conclusion to the trauma and anxiety of waiting ages for a new season."
DoHoangHaK47403 put: "I'm both happy and sad knowing there will be a season 4 to sit back and watch. Last season - last memories pls." Thabang06964531 wrote: "Why season final, we were still enjoying the series. But at least the waiting is over since we know about the releasing date."
Sex Education is a British teen comedy drama that follows the lives of the students, staff and parents of the fictional Moordale Secondary School. Viewers tune in as the characters are regularly faced with various personal dilemmas, often related to sexual intimacy.
As with most coming of age dramas, things reach a natural conclusion and Sex Education has been praised by fans for realising when to bow out. Gingertempura shared: "Such a great series and love that the ending is coming about organically and not forced by cancelation— or that the series is being prolonged for the sake of commerce."
Rainsblog typed: "I love when showrunners know exactly when a show is supposed to end." Sex Education, which first aired in 2029, will return to Netflix for its last series on September 21. It'll be an emotional time for fans like Othersidedoor, who said: "Sex education is coming back but it’s the last season of all i'm gonna cry."
