Netflix clamping down on sharing passwords with major change coming

Netflix is planning to crack down on password sharing at the end of March in a bid to boost revenue.

The streaming giant currently has the ability to check what devices an account is signed into, allowing them to cap the number of places you can stream content from the one account. But it is believed that Netflix will start associating an account with an address or a single device, to crack down on widespread password sharing for free.

They are also looking to introduce paid password sharing, meaning that people could pay for the ability to share their accounts "more broadly". In a letter to shareholders, they said they expect to start rolling out paid sharing before the end of March.

“While our terms of use limit use of Netflix to a household, we recognise this is a change for members who share their account more broadly,” the letter read. “So we’ve worked hard to build additional new features that improve the Netflix experience, including the ability for members to review which devices are using their account and to transfer a profile to a new account.

"As we roll out paid sharing, members in many countries will also have the option to pay extra if they want to share Netflix with people they don’t live with. As is the case today, all members will be able to watch while travelling, whether on a TV or mobile device."
