Netflix Black Mirror's Loch Henry episode leaves Scottish viewers 'cringing' at stereotypes

People were scrambling yesterday to hit their sofas and jump in to the latest series of Black Mirror as Netflix dropped its sixth series.

And while it got off to a good start for many, it was the second episode that made Scots cringe, despite it having a twist that left many shocked.

Taking to Twitter to discuss the episode, people made their feelings pretty clear with some stating that the accents, the swearing and general 'vibes' were very stereotypically Scottish. One questioned: "What even are the accents in Black Mirror's Loch Henry @NetflixUK? Certainly no Scottish. Please get actual Scottish people to play Scottish characters."

Despite some being not-so convinced about the accents, John Hannah who was born in East Kilbride and Daniel Portman, who was born in Strathbungo, were praised for their acting.

But when it came to the stereotypes, some people were not having it.

Talking about this one said: "I’m one min into the Scottish Black Mirror and already had to pause to cringe at the accents, whyyyyyy can’t we be normal on TV? Whyyyyy can’t we be played by actual Scottish people?"

Another said: "Black Mirror has a Scottish episode and all they do is swear. Also me: "Why the f*** do they have to show us Scots as swearing??" #BlackMirror"

Despite many Scots feeling as if some accents were nothing short of "cringe", others loved the episode and the twist - and don't worry, we won't spoil it for you.

In defence of the episode, and away from the accents one tweeted: "Loch Henry not really a Black Mirror episode but it was still so good."

Another thought: "Black Mirror Season 6's "Loch Henry" had my heart literally stopped. It was an absolutely awesome episode."
