Bird Box was once Netflix's most streamed movie of all time after it was released back in 2018, with Sandra Bullock as the main character. In its first seven days of streaming, the sci-fi original Netflix movie broke all records on the platform, with more than 45 million watching the realistic horror flick.
And now fans will be pleased that five years later the global phenomenon is making a comeback with a surprise spin-off announced by the streaming platform this week. On Tuesday (May 9), Netflix dropped a teaser clip for the upcoming sequel, titled Bird Box Barcelona - which you can watch below.
The Spanish-language spin-off will focus on how the mysterious virus impacted parts of Europe - specifically Spain - and includes a Spanish cast and creators. The upcoming spin-off is schedule to premiere July 14, 2023 - so not too long to wait.
On the Netflix website, a synopsis of the film reads: "From the producers of the global phenomenon, Bird Box, comes BIRD BOX BARCELONA, an expansion of the film that riveted audiences in 2018.
"After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows."
In a post on its official Twitter account, Netflix shared a teaser trailer alongside the words: "Are you ready to see... again? Bird Box Barcelona premieres July 14." The post quickly captured mass attention from fans, with the clip reaching more than one million views and plenty of comments.

Netflix's 2018 Bird Box is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which people have to wear a blindfold at all times otherwise they will see a mysterious life force that will attack and cause them to die. The film follows the character Malorie Hayes, played by Sandra Bullock, as she tries to protect herself and two children from entities.
Bird Box was originally a post-apocalyptic novel and the debut novel by American writer and singer Josh Malerman.
