Gears of War is coming back in a big way, as Netflix announced two new small-screen projects based on the franchise.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix will produce a live-action Gears of War movie and an “adult” animated series. Long-time series developer The Coalition will assist with these projects, likely to ensure both remain faithful to the source material. Casting and production details are still a massive question mark right now.
“Gears of War was released 16 years ago today and to mark the occasion, Netflix has partnered with The Coalition to adapt the video game saga into a live-action feature film, followed by an adult animated series — with the potential for more stories to follow,” Netflix said on Twitter.
Hollywood studios have been trying to get a Gear of War major motion picture off the ground for years. New Line Cinema and Universal tried to adapt the series way back in 2007, but that project never took off in any meaningful way. At least, nothing materialized into a complete film.
Netflix’s track record with solid video game adaptations is pretty spotty. Sure, the Emmy-award-winning Arcane is excellent, but then there’s stuff like the poorly-received Resident Evil show.
