Netflix adds fab feel-good period movie with 94 percent Rotten Tomatoes critic score

Lesley Manville as Mrs Harris, getting a dress fitting, in MRS.HARRIS GOES TO PARIS, a Focus Features release.

Netflix has added Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, a wonderful feel-good period movie that has a remarkably high Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 94 percent.

Its audience score is pretty good too, at 93 percent, making it easily one of the best movies to stream now on Netflix! Released in 2022, Mrs Harris Goes to Paris stars Oscar-nominated actor Lesley Manville as Ada Harris who embarks on an incredible journey. It's available on Netflix in the UK, while in the US you can watch it on Starz.

The story — based on the 1958 novel, "Mrs 'Arris Goes to Paris", by Paul Gallico — begins with Mrs Harris working as a widowed cleaning lady in London for the incredibly upper-class Lady Dant, (Anna Chancellor), who owns some Dior dresses. When Mrs Harris spots the garments she is struck by their beauty and elegance and decides she must own one.

For the next three years, Mrs Harris saves every penny she can (plus a little gambling, here and there) and finally has enough money to go to Paris and buy her very own Dior dress. When she gets there, however, she discovers that purchasing such an exclusive garment isn't as simple as popping into a regular shop and picking one off the rail.

Mrs Harris hasn't come all this way to fall at the first hurdle, though, so, with the help of some amazing new friends, she sets about making her dream become a reality and helping her newfound friends along the way.

You might also know star Lesley Manville from the wonderful television series Mum and her role as Princess Margaret in The Crown. She also starred in Magpie Murders, the TV version of Anthony Horowitz's best-selling murder mystery. Lesley received a 2018 Oscar nomination for the film Phantom Thread, which also starred Daniel Day-Lewis. Interestingly, like Mrs Harris, that film was also about dresses and set in the 1950s.

Other key cast include Lambert Wilson as the Marquis de Chassange, a rich widower who becomes very interested in Mrs Harris. And Isabelle Huppert as Claudine Colbert, a manager at the Christian Dior boutique.

Paul Gallico's book has actually been adapted twice before, with Gracie Fields in a 1958 movie followed by Angela Lansbury in a 1992 version. Paul Gallico's book series also sees Mrs Harris enjoying adventures in New York and Moscow. Mrs Harris Goes to Paris is available to stream now on Netflix.
