Netanyahu expressed surprise at the dissenting opinions within his government, particularly after a decision had been made to maintain control over the corridor. He raised concerns about the potential message this conflicting stance could send to Hamas, the militant group in control of Gaza.
The Philadelphi corridor is a 14-kilometer strip of land along Gaza’s border with Egypt that is currently under Israeli military control. The presence of Israeli troops in this area has been a major point of contention in negotiations with Hamas, particularly concerning ceasefires and the release of hostages.
