Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with mayors of Israel’s northernmost communities to discuss the situation following a ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah. During the meeting, Netanyahu assured the mayors that there is no immediate pressure for residents to return to their homes. Kiryat Shmona Mayor Avihay Shtern shared that Netanyahu acknowledged the current challenges and emphasized that residents will not be forced to return until it is safe to do so.
The meeting was marked by tension, as some mayors, including Shtern, criticized the ceasefire deal as a 'surrender agreement.' Shtern expressed his frustration, stating that he was not convinced by Netanyahu that the agreement would ensure the safety of his community. He voiced concerns about the potential re-infiltration of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, posing a renewed threat to Israel’s northern regions.
While recognizing the Israeli military's efforts in weakening Hezbollah in recent months, Shtern remains apprehensive about the group regrouping and posing a threat again. He emphasized the need for further security measures to prevent any potential risks to his community. Shtern concluded by stating that in the current situation, he cannot advise residents to return to their homes.
