Nephew of Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch spotted as Dublin cops placed on high alert

The nephew of Gerry “The Monk” Hutch has been pictured walking around Dublin city centre days after his uncle was acquitted for murder. Derek "Del Boy” Hutch, 39, was snapped in a busy area of the city, with police on high alert that his family could be targeted.

Gardai in Dublin fear the Kinahan cartel could target "The Monk", 60, and his relatives with an increased presence of officers on the ground in the city. On Friday, the nephew was out and about, reports the Irish Mirror.

He shares a home with his father Patsy, who is the brother of Gerry. There are reportedly officers stationed at their home permanently.

A source told the Irish Mirror: “Patsy and Del Boy live their lives looking over their shoulder.

“They don’t come out in public too often but when they do it’s on their home patch in the north inner city.

Gerry "The Monk" Hutch was found not guilty of the murder of David Byrne (PA)

“Although the threat has lessened in recent years it’s still there and that’s why you have gardai outside their home 24 hours a day.

“In the last week, the concern is will the Kinahans employ someone to try to strike again against anyone associated with the Hutch family?”

Hutch was found not guilty last week of the murder of 34-year-old David Byrne last week and was flanked by his nephew and brother as he left the Criminal Courts of Justice. He returned home and was spotted walking around Dublin on the days following the trial.

Ms Justice Tara Burns told the Special Criminal Court that Gerry was not guilty but that his brother 'may have organised the hotel attack' that killed Byrne.

She stated: “A reasonable possibility arises on the evidence that the Regency was planned by Patsy Hutch and that Gerard Hutch stepped in, as head of the family, to attempt to sort out the aftermath of the Regency, particularly as his own life was at risk."

Patsy's son, Gary, was previously a member of the Kinahan cartel but was murdered in September 2015. There was a previous attempt to kill "The Monk" in a pub in Lanzarote by the mob before the Regency Hotel attack.

The lives of Gerry’s nephews Gareth and Derek Coakley along with his brother Eddie and two friends, Noel Duggan and Noel Kirwan have been lost as a result of the gang warfare. Patsy has also reportedly survived three attempts on his life with a number of men in prison for plots to kill him.
