Nemanja Matic gives honest verdict on Manchester United squad and their performance this season

Nemanja Matic has admitted that Manchester United's players are "not happy" with how this season has unfolded.

The Serbian made the admission ahead of Thursday evening's clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford. United entered the contest sixth in the table after back-to-back defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal.

United, who will be under the guidance of incoming manager Erik ten Hag next season, have fallen massively short of expectations this season, meaning huge pressure is going to be on the Dutchman and the club's hierarchy to correct those wrongs this forthcoming summer. Big changes are expected to made to the squad, including the departure of Matic, who recently confirmed that he will be leaving the club this season.

The former Chelsea man has not shied away from United's struggles this season, admitting that the standards they have set have been nowhere near good enough. With that in mind, Matic has admitted that the players have not enjoyed this term.

"We haven't had a great season," Matic told Sky Sports. "But we are talking every day and are doing our best to finish the season in the best possible way.

"We know that our supporters are not happy, we are also not happy. But we have four more games to play and we will try to win every single one of them, if possible.

"We know that it is going to be hard but we need to make our fans happy. Tonight, we have a very important game against a very, very good team, so it is another chance for us."
