Nelson Mandela’s grandson criticises Meghan Markle over royal wedding celebration remarks

Meghan Markle has drawn criticism from Nelson Mandela’s grandson after she claimed she was told that her marriage to Prince Harry was ‘rejoiced in the streets’ just as when Mandela was freed from prison.

The comment was made by Meghan during an interview with The Cut magazine. The Duchess of Sussex said that a Lion King cast member told her in 2019 that they had celebrated her becoming part of the royal family in the same way as when Nelson Mandela was freed after 27 years in prison in 1990, The Mirror reports .

Meghan recalled the moment the cast member pulled her aside: "He looked at me, and he just said: 'I just need you to know, when you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison'," she said.

Zwelivelile ‘Mandla’ Mandela, a member of South Africa’s parliament, said that he was "surprised" by Meghan’s remarks, adding that her marriage to Prince Harry was not comparable to his grandfather’s release. He told MailOnline : "Madiba's celebration was based on overcoming 350 years of colonialism with 60 years of a brutal apartheid regime in South Africa. So it cannot be equated to as the same."

Meghan also spoke about the couple’s decision to step back from royal duties in 2020 during the interview, saying that they were “happy” to leave the UK. The Mirror has approached Mr Mandela for comment.
