Neil Warnock weighs in on Man Utd manager debate as he pinpoints ideal candidate

Mauricio Pochettino has long been linked with a move into the dugout at Manchester United.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick vacates the seat to move into an upstairs role at the end of this summer and that has led to many believing PSG chief Pochettino could replace him.

The former Tottenham boss is constantly linked to a Premier League return, following six years of good work at Southampton and then Spurs.

However, he has been warned against taking the post - or a fairytale return back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Veteran manager Neil Warnock believes the Argentine would have too big a job on his hands trying to rebuild United.

Is Pochettino the man to get United firing again? Let us know in the comments

And he says only one man stands out as being ideal for what is needed at Old Trafford.

"I think it's a massive job. If I was Pochettino, I wouldn’t think about coming to Man Utd," Warnock told talkSPORT.

"The only person I can think of now, which I never thought about, is Brendan Rodgers. I think he'd possibly be a good move.

"I think Brendan is realising how difficult it is at Leicester and I think it might be a good time to change over.

"I think Brendan does deal with these stars."

Warnock also advised Pochettino against an emotional switch back to Spurs.

He added: "I don't see Pochettino wanting to come back (to England) because there's a heck of a lot of work. You talk about them (United) and Spurs, they both need three or four players.

"I can't see Daniel Levy giving him the money to bring the players in that he needs.

"They need world class players and they're not going to get them for 30-40 million quid."

Pochettino has fallen out with the hierarchy at PSG including over the high-profile summer transfer of Lionel Messi from Barcelona.

The 49-year-old remains the favourite for the United job with the Old Trafford hierarchy confident of landing their man.

That revelation was later fleshed out by Mirror Football reporting that the Argentine was the preferred candidate among the players in United’s dressing room.

The Argentine is open to leaving the French capital at the end of the campaign amid the admiration from United – with a summer appointment at Old Trafford increasingly feasible.

As for Warnock, his most recent job in management saw him exit Middlesbrough acrimoniously, back in October.

Recent weeks have seen him linked with the Barnsley job and as soon as a post becomes available in the Championship, his name seems to immediately circulate.

And he has refused to rule out a short-term return before this season is over.

He said: "What would tempt me back? Well, I never left… I always said I was going to pack it in at the end of the season… I’m not bothered where I go, I just enjoy being a manager.

“I enjoy the rapport with the players on the training ground and what have you – I wouldn’t write off taking another club until the end of the season this year.”
