Neighbours woken by 'explosion' that left 124 homes without power

Neighbours in one area woke up to a loud "bang" this morning that left them without electricity.

Some residents in Banks reported hearing a "large explosion" across the village at 4.11am this morning (January 3) that left 124 houses without power. Electricity North West said they do not know what caused the noise but power supplies were removed from the homes during a "safety inspection".

After inspections were carried out by engineers "no damage" was found to the supply lines and power was restored at 11.41am.

In a post on Facebook, neighbours remarked that the bang was so loud it was heard a town over. One person said: "I heard it too and I’m in Crossens".

Another commented: "Bloody hell with a flash like that it could have been a gas explosion." One person said: "Woke me up. I was looking out everywhere and we are at the other end of the village."

A spokesperson for Electricity North West said: “In the early hours of this morning, we received a call from a customer who reportedly heard a bang in Banks which affected the power network. At 7.27am, for safety reasons, we removed power supplies to 124 properties whilst engineers inspected sections of the overhead network in the area.

“After inspections were completed, we found no damage had been caused and supplies were restored at 11.41am. We aren’t sure, [what the cause was] engineers couldn’t see anything when they carried out inspections."
