Neighbours viewers 'crying' as fan favourite tells ex-girlfriend he stills loves her

Neighbours viewers were teary-eyed as the long-running soap opera came to an end on Friday night, with a fan favourite character finally re-declaring his love for his former flame.

The Australian soap opera aired its finale this evening, which saw iconic characters like Scott Robinson ( Jason Donovan ) and Charlene Robinson ( Kylie Minogue ) return.

It was the fairytale ending for Mike Young ( Guy Pearce ) and Jane Harris (Annie Jones) that had viewers in tears though, following his return to Ramsay Street in a recent episode.

They had been in a relationship when they were younger but separated in a storyline that aired in around 1988 - which came shortly before Mike left Erinsborough in 1989.

Neighbours' last few episodes however saw them reconnect amid his return, with the finale seeing Mike finally declare his love for Jane once again after more than 30 years apart.

It saw Mike decide to stay on Ramsay Street, proposing that him and Jane reconcile their relationship - with the pair getting their fairytale ending as the show came to an end.

Mike said to Jane: "You were the first person I wanted to see when I came back. The reality is, I'm still in love with you. Probably more now than I ever used to be."

They were later seen lovingly together at the very end of the finale when the neighbourhood gathered for a celebration - with fans emotional over the couple's reunion.

"I'm not crying, you're crying! What did you do to me #Neighbours? But you made my Mike and Jane wish come true," tweeted one viewer following the finale of the show.

Another said: "Thoroughly enjoyed the last couple of #Neighbours episodes as a one time massive fan. Jane and Mike, though; not ashamed to say, a bit of a tear in the old eye!"

A third person tweeted about the couple: "Haven't watched #Neighbours #NeighboursFinale for 20 years or so. Was a crying mess when Mike and Jane got back together."

"Well that was lovely and tearful to watch. Who'd have thought [my younger self's] disappointment would be rectified years later when [they] finally get back together," said one.

Another said: "I thought it'd be all about Scott and Charlene but in the end it was Mike and Jane that stole the show." A fourth said: "Jane and Mike together - that's all I wanted."

"Omg! I'm a wreck! That was sooo good! I felt 16 again! Yay for Jane and Mike," tweeted another viewer. Another even tweeted: "[I'd] be happy to watch a Mike and Jane spinoff."
