Neighbours sets to be 'dismantled' following nostalgia-filled finale of the soap

The set of Neighbours will reportedly be "dismantled" after this weekend, following the long-running Australian soap opera's final episode – which had aired in the UK on Friday night.

The show, which debuted in 1985, came to a close with a nostalgia-filled finale, in which characters such as Charlene Robinson ( Kylie Minogue ) returned to Ramsay Street.

It marked the end of a 37-year run for the soap opera, which had followed the lives of residents in the fictional Erinsborough – but was filmed, in part, on sets in Melbourne.

Although there's a real cul-de-sac that doubles for Ramsay Street, much of the filming took place in studios and on a backlot, which fans have been able to visit on tours.

It's however now been reported the Neighbours sets will shortly be "dismantled," with a source stating that the space is to be used for an upcoming project instead.

Terry Smit of Go West Tours – who are said to look after the official Neighbours tour – told the Daily Star that it means there will be "nothing left" for fans to be able to see.

He commented: "We are advised by Fremantle Media that the sets will be dismantled and that the space will be used for their next project, whatever that may be."

Fremantle – the production company and distributor of the show – has yet to confirm the news itself or announce what the 'project' taking over the set could be.

Terry further commented about the tour of the Neighbours studio backlot: "As the sets are being dismantled, there is nothing left for us to tour, so the tour will be discontinued."

The final set tours are said to be taking place on Saturday (July 30) and Sunday (July 31), with a website for such tours stating that the last visits are unsurprisingly fully booked.

Neighbours' finale had cameos from former cast members including Jason Donovan, who played Scott Robinson, and Margot Robbie, who played Donna Freedman.

The double-length episode – which aired on Channel 5 in the UK – featured flashback scenes and references to the show's history, as viewers said goodbye to Ramsay Street.

The Mirror approached Fremantle for comment.
