Neighbours 'relieved' after homes plan for farmland near Bramcote greenbelt rejected

Neighbours have spoken of their relief after a plan to build homes on farmland was rejected.

Developers had put forward proposals to build 60 houses on Hulks Farm, off Coventry Lane in Bramcote.

But their application was rejected unanimously by Broxtowe Borough Council's planning committee on Wednesday, March 9.

Locals were relieved over the rejection of the plans, which they said would take away green space and put pressure on services.

Charlie Smith, 26, a web developer who lives in Bramcote, said that he would have been "upset" if the plans had been passed.

"I think most people would have been upset if they had been built - I would have been upset too.

"There have been a lot of plans for the area around us - but we do need more houses as its difficult at the minute to buy.

"You see a lot of locals walking dogs or just out in the fresh air around these fields, and we do have a lot of green space around here that people use.

"A lot of people will be relieved about this but there has to be a balance."

Julie Hunter, 82, who is retired and regularly walks around the footpaths in the area, said: The 60 homes not going ahead is a nice start but there are a lot of houses planned already for this area.

"The problems it would create with infrastructure would be horrific with the access roads off Coventry Lane.

"There is no green space anymore, everywhere is being concreted over for houses.

"It's a big relief that they have been stopped, there have already been plans for the Golf course as well."

The land where the 60 homes were planned borders a site next to Bramcote Crematorium where outline planning permission has recently been granted for almost 200 homes.

Such planning permission means the development can go ahead in principle but that further plans must be submitted typically to do with the access arrangements to the site and appearance of the houses.

This was an issue raised by councillors who said that if the 60-home development was approved it could interrupt this separate development.

An anonymous resident, who lives and works nearby, added: "They have got to build houses, but if I'm being selfish I would want more green space.

"England is covered in green space but the gaps between towns are being filled in.

"But a lot of houses are planned, so its good for some of them to be rejected to show that it is being thought through properly."

Councillor David Watts, who chaired the planning committee meeting, and who represents Bramcote for the Liberal Democrats on the borough council, said he was "deeply troubled" at the thought of a development close to the greenbelt.

Local people previously said that the proposed transformation of the farmland into housing would be a 'step too far' for the area.

The plans for the 60 homes were submitted on behalf of Keepmoat Homes.

Broxtowe Borough Council planning officers had recommended approval before councillors voted on the plans.
