Neighbours recall 'big screech' before car crashed into Nottingham shop

Neighbours recalled hearing a 'big screech' before a car crashed into a Nottingham corner shop. Nottinghamshire Police are appealing for witnesses after the incident in Nottingham Road, Basford, on Wednesday, March 8.

Jaspal Newsagent Off Licence Convenience Store was damaged in the crash and work is currently being carried out on the building. Police cordon tape and a barrier are still in place.

The emergency services were called shortly before 6pm after the crash, which happened on the corner of Chelmsford Road. Two cars were involved in a collision, before one crashed into the shop. The driver and passenger in the other car were taken to hospital for treatment and were later released.

Harrold Adkin, 67 lives near where the scene took place. Harrold, who is now retired, said: “I heard a big screech and then all of sudden, the place was flooded with police.

“Buses were diverted, everything was cordoned off. It’s a shame really - especially about the corner shop, everyone around here uses it, everyone at some point has been in there.”

The Jaspal Newsagents is owned by shopkeeper ‘Jessie’ and has been in the area for more than 30 years. Anne Holmes, 55 lives in Whitemoor.

Anne, a cleaner, said: “There was a lot of traffic, I didn’t come down here until the next day when I saw the damage to the shop hopefully soon, it’ll be good as new but just looking at the damage, you can tell what happened was awful, I’m glad no one was hurt.”

Shannon Jarrett, 23 lives in Basford. The full-time mum said: “I live locally and heard about it, it’s terrible, the shop is really well used for a lot of people in the area.

“It’s sad to see what damage the crash has caused.”

PC Emily Mitchell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a significant collision and we are still working to understand exactly what happened in the moments before, during and after it happened.

“To this end we would like to hear from any additional witnesses who saw what happened or may have recorded it on a dashcam.”
