Neighbours 'over the moon' as 'monstrous' 5G plans rejected

Householders on a Wirral estate are “over the moon” as plans for a “monstrous” 5G mast have been rejected.

The 20 metre mast would have gone up on Magazine Road in Bromborough to improve phone connectivity in the area, according to telecoms giant Three.

A letter from Wirral Council explaining the application's refusal said: “The proposed development, by virtue of its siting and appearance, would be unduly prominent in the street scene, leading to a detrimental effect on visual amenity and the character of the area.”

The letter added: “The economic and social benefits of improved mobile connectivity are outweighed in this instance by the harm to amenity arising from the location of the mast.”

Tony and Jane Pugh, who live on Magazine Road, were against the plans and said it would ruin the view from their house overlooking an old railway path. While not everyone in the area were against the plans, Mr Pugh said most were still opposed.

He said: “We were over the moon when we found out. It really is a very, very quiet road. It is not a through road and just serves our little estate.

"The only people that come in are the people who live there, deliveries, and the bin men. In a few months time, the outlook will be absolutely gorgeous outside our front window.

Mr Pugh said Cllr Sue Percy, who represents Bromborough, had “done a great job” with helping neighbours oppose the mast plans. Cllr Percy had asked the deadline for a decision to be pushed back to put forward a case against the plans and allow more time for people to comment.

Cllr Percy said: “I am really pleased for the residents and I am really pleased for the whole road. It was just a resolution that the residents wanted. I put a good case forward and it was refused so happy days.

“Thankfully the council listened to the residents and realised they had a fight on their hands. That’s what us councillors are here for.”

Three have the right to appeal the decision for six months

Previously, a Three spokesperson said: “5G rollout is vital for residents and businesses of Bromborough. We want to offer the local area a reliable network experience and this site will be critical to making that happen.

“While we try to keep mast sites as unobtrusive as possible, masts do need to be situated where people will be using the service and, in many cases, in precise locations to ensure the widest breadth of coverage. We carry out extensive searches and evaluate a wide range of options before submitting any planning applications."
