Neighbours love living next to 'amazing' Goose Fair site - and are glad it's back

After a three-year absence, Goose Fair returned to the Forest Recreation Ground last week. It's been a time of misery and hardship since the last event in 2019, with plans over the last few years upended by the pandemic.

But the colourful, spectacular event is back, bringing rides, games and all our favourite funfair food and drink. Exciting new white knuckle rides for 2022 included Void and the UK's newest loop fighter, Red Devil.

With hundreds of thousands of people expected to have attended once the fair comes to an end on Sunday, October 9, we've spoken to those living close to Goose Fair - to find out what living nearby the noisy event is like after three years without it on their doorstep.

Katie Hember, 44, who lives in Austen Avenue, said: "I just love it and I think it's amazing living near [to the fair]. It's just a stone's throw away which is great for me and the family - we always head over when we can.

"We were quite down when it had to close during the pandemic. I was told last year that it was going to be running and I think it might have been a last-minute decision to stop it, which was a shame.

"But anyway the rides and the stalls are great. The only complaint I would have is the litter.

"People chuck rubbish on to the road and you know it can flow down into the streets and it's a bit of a pain. I don't have any issue with the noise.

"People are having fun and that's great."

Andrew McIntosh, 24, who lives nearby, said:" This is my first year in this area but I really enjoyed it when I went. I guess I can understand maybe some of the older people not liking being surrounded by it - there are a lot more people than I expected when I found out it was going to be here."

Not everybody enjoys living so close to the event, however.

Paula Edwards, 57, who lives in Burford Road, said: "Oh it can be a nightmare. I know that I sound like complaining about the noise but I like to get to bed early, me. And it's really difficult to do that with all the racket.

"There's a lot of litter too. There are bins all over the place so you just wonder why in this day and age people are letting their kids throw rubbish onto the floor.

"Parking can be a nightmare too. I'm lucky because no one will park right up close to a house but some of the roads are blocked up with cars!

"There's a lot of people coming every day so it's no surprise it happens but there should be more done to make sure people know not to park on other people's roads."
