Neighbours' Jemma Donovan promises fans will be 'blown away' by soap's ending

Neighbours star Jemma Donovan says fans will be "blown away" by the very special ending to the soap.

The Channel 5 programme has been axed after over three decades, with its final episodes to air this summer as fans of the popular show say goodbye to Ramsay Street and its residents for good.

Bosses of the show are keeping the finale very much under wraps but Jemma - who is the daughter of Neighbours legend Jason Donovan and plays Harlow on the show - has promised fans won't be disappointed by the ending.

Whilst she couldn't divulge too much information about the plans, she promised it would be very celebratory.

Speaking about the upcoming finale, she said: "Our fans are so invested in the programme, and I love that they dissect and analysis even the most minute detail – now that’s dedication! I know our fans are going to be blown away by what is being planned for the finale, very celebratory … but that’s all I’m saying for the moment!"

Asked if she gets approached in the street about her character a lot, she added: "I think it's tricky with soap actors because obviously they have to accommodate really quite dramatic storylines and probably sometimes irrational storylines.

"I think sometimes it's hard because people don't disassociate your character from you. It's something that you have to just become aware of and ignore. I do think people underestimate that you do get comments about your character and you're like, "It's just not me." I'm fine about it and it doesn't really bother me too much, but it is an interesting world, I think."

With so many of her family being involved in the show, Jemma admitted she initially felt "pressure" to prove herself on the soap.

"I think, at the beginning I was like, 'Oh, I really want to make sure that I prove myself here as well, and not just come on because of the family name in that sense.' So, I think there was a bit of pressure, but I really enjoyed proving myself," she said.

"I love acting, I've always wanted to be an actor, so to be able to do something, on this show as well, and it is the most incredible training ground for any actor. I've learned so much and I'm so grateful."

She added: "Even with people like Stefan as well, who've been there for so long, you do learn so much from those cast members. Walking on to set, it did feel instantly quite familiar because of my dad and the other people that were on it too, family members. It's been incredible and I do genuinely feel so grateful to be able to be a part of it as well. "

*Neighbours airs Monday to Friday at 1:45pm and 6pm on Channel 5.
