Neighbours in shock after seeing 'black smoke' coming from home

Shocked neighbours have recalled seeing "smoke" coming from a property after a fire broke out on Tuesday night.

At around 6.45pm on Tuesday, January 3, neighbours on Holmwood Drive, Formby were confronted by firefighters, paramedics, and ambulances on the normally quiet street.

Police described the fire as a "serious incident" and a cordoned off the property. Neighbours said they were "shocked" by the fire and "want to know how it happened".

Speaking to the ECHO one woman said: "We came back from a walk at around 7pm and we could see all of the fire engines outside the house and firemen had all the gear on.

"I did not see any flames but there was black smoke billowing out of the chimney and it was going all along the back of the house as well."

Paramedics were at the scene and police have confirmed that the fire is being treated as non-suspicious.

One man who has lived on the road for two years said: "There was smoke coming out of the building and then emergency services turned up out of nowhere. They used hoses too. It's a shock.

"We were putting the kids to bed at the time and they were nervous and wanted to know what was going on.

"I think everyone wants to know what happened for prevention purposes, how everything could turn so quickly."

A spokesperson for Merseyside fire and rescue service said: "Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended an incident on Holmwood Drive, Formby on the evening of Tuesday 3rd January. Crews were alerted at 6.45pm and two fire engines were on scene at 6.52pm.

"A further three fire engines attended to provide additional breathing apparatus support, taking the total number of appliances to five at the height of the incident. North West Ambulance Service and Merseyside Police also attended.

"An initial two firefighters were committed to fight the fire in breathing apparatus (BA) with a hose reel jet and search the two-story detached house. An additional two firefighters in BA were deployed to the property with a further hose reel jet taking the total firefighters inside the property to four.

"The fire was extinguished soon after and ventilation of the property ensued. The scene was handed over to Merseyside Police and our crews left the scene at 10.27pm."
