Neighbours horrified over 'awful' crash which killed dad and young son

A community has voiced its shock after a dad and his young son died following a three-car crash on a busy road.

The emergency services were called to Chesterfield North Road in Mansfield, close to the junction with Pleasley Hill, just after 6.10pm on Saturday, January 15.

Police said three cars are believed to have been involved and the family of the father and son who died are being supported by officers.

The driver of one of the other vehicles was also taken to hospital after suffering multiple fractures.

His injuries are not currently thought to be life-threatening.

William Burke, 30, a teacher who lives Chesterfield Road North, said: "I had heard about it - I saw something on Facebook, it's awful news.

"I have a two-year-old and when I heard about it you instantly think the worst.

"This road has always been a nightmare for traffic, you see cars going down at 40 and 50mph."

Margaret Clarke, 80, a retired carer who lives on Chesterfield Road North, said: "We heard it first of all and saw police closing off the road, but I'll tell you I've been here 60 years and there's always trouble on this road.

"That's why I've got no gates at the front there, they've been smashed in twice."

Patrick Harewood, 41, who also lives in Chesterfield Road North, added: "That's terrible; our living room is in the back so we don't hear too much of the noise out the front.

"I'd heard there was a crash but there have been a few recently around here."

A female resident who wished to remain anonymous said: "I hadn't heard but that's horrible.

"When you hear something like that it makes you want to cry."

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident 561 of January 15 2022, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
