Neighbours' eerie abandoned set sits neglected six months after filming halted

The set of iconic soap Neighbours sits abandoned and unloved six months after the cameras were turned off and packed away.

The hit show was hauled off the air earlier this year, marking the end of a 37-year run for the Aussie programme.

Margot Robbie, Guy Pearce, Jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue all appeared to say goodbye in June, before the last ever show went out later in the summer.

But a lot of the props still haven't been cleared out after production wrapped.

Although there's a real cul-de-sac that doubles for iconic Ramsay Street, much of the filming took place in studios and on a backlot in Melbourne.

But away from the famous road, photos show the Erinsborough High lockers covered in foliage and The Waterhole pub's beautiful lake turned green with algae as it battled against weeds.

The Lassiters Complex has also seen better days as scripts belonging to actress Georgie Stone and cardboard cut-outs of Stefan Dennis, played ruthless businessman Paul Robinson, could be seen lying around.

Discarded props and other paraphernalia , such as the much-loved Ramsay Street signpost, was sat unclaimed against a wall.

Pictures also show abandoned houses, the once frantic living room and garden of number 22, where Terese Willis and Glen Donnelly stayed before the show ended, were looking sad.

Neighbours wrapped up its historic near-40 year run with a 90-minute special in July.

The show, which debuted in 1985, came to a close with a nostalgia-filled finale, in which characters such as Charlene Robinson ( Kylie Minogue ) returned.

It appears the Neighbours sets will at some point be "dismantled," with a source stating that the space is to be used for an upcoming project instead.

Terry Smit of Go West Tours – who are said to look after the official Neighbours tour – told the Daily Star earlier this year that it means there will be "nothing left" for fans to be able to see.

He commented: "We are advised by Fremantle Media that the sets will be dismantled and that the space will be used for their next project, whatever that may be.

"As the sets are being dismantled, there is nothing left for us to tour, so the tour will be discontinued."

Fremantle – the production company and distributor of the show – has yet to confirm the news itself or announce what the 'project' taking over the set could be.

Neighbours aired on Channel 5 for more than ten years, and was previously broadcast on the BBC.

It was axed after Channel 5 decided in March not to renew its contract with production company Fremantle.

The producers confirmed back in March: "We are so sorry to say that after nearly 37 years and almost 9,000 episodes broadcast we have to confirm that Neighbours will cease production in the summer," they said.

"Following the loss of our key broadcast partner in the UK and despite an extensive search for alternative funding, we simply have no option but to rest the show.

"To our amazing, loyal fans, we know this is a huge disappointment, as it is to all of us on the team. We thank you for all your messages and support and promise to end the show on an incredible high."

Kylie reminisced about her time on the programme in a tweet mourning the cancellation was announced.

"I'll be forever grateful for the experience and the friends I made on Neighbours," she wrote.

"We had no idea how big the show would become and how passionately viewers would take it to heart. Pure love!

"I can still hear Madge calling… CHARLENE!"
