The Neighbours characters who surprisingly returned in emotional finale

It was an emotional Farwell for fans of much-loved Australian soap Neighbours on Friday evening. The long-running show came to an end on July 29, 2022, after 37 years.

While Hollywood actor Guy Pearce's return for the last couple of episodes as Mike Young and Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan's return might have stolen the show for many, fans will also have loved the appearance by some much-loved characters from over the years.

Mainstays Paul Robinson, Karl and Susan Kennedy and Jarrod 'Toadie' Rebecchi were joined by a number of familiar faces from over the years on the finale, including Peter O'Brien, Margot Robbie, Delta Goodrem, Natalie Imbruglia Holly Valance, Kym Valentine, Jesse Spencer, and Natalie Bassingthwaighte.

Ian Smith's beloved Harold Bishop had been back for a few weeks while Lucinda Cowden first reprised her role as Melanie Pearson in 2021 after starring in the show between 1987 and 1991, and again in 2005.

But it was appearances by some other much-loved characters from over the years that had many fans tearing up.

Anne Charleston made a brief return as the iconic Madge Bishop 21 years after her character's death on the soap . Madge appeared alongside on-screen husband Harold in the final moments of the episode during an emotional speech by long-term character Susan Kennedy.

Also at the table with Harold and Madge was Jason Donovan's real-life father Terence Donovan, who played Doug Willis.

His character also appeared as a ghost in the final scene as Susan recounted memories of loved ones from the street over the years. Terence Donovan starred as Doug Willis on the show from 1990 until 1994, returning in 2014 before his death in 2016

And viewers will have spotted popular character Philip Martin played by Ian Rawlings in the final scenes. The character of Phil married Julie Robinson in the 1980s. His daughter Hannah was also a main character on the show before their departure in the 1990s.

Eagle eyed fans will also have spotted the episode's direct, Scott Majors, in the final scenes. Majors also played Lucas Fitzgerald in the show and featured as Peter Rivers in popular 90s Australian teen show Heartbreak High.
