Neighbours cast celebrates first day of filming new series of saved Australian soap

Rebooted soap Neighbours has officially started filming new episodes nine months after the last episode aired in the UK.

There was a global outcry when the Australian show, which had run for more than three decades, was cancelled last year after being dropped from Channel 5’s schedule.

The final episode aired in summer 2022 and saw some of the show’s biggest names return such as Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Natalie Imbruglia and Margot Robbie.

Then, four months later, streaming platform Amazon Freevee announced that they had picked the show up and would soon begin filming new episodes with a number of old cast members signing on to return.

Fast forward to now and the cast have posed for pictures celebrating their first day of filming in Melbourne.

“Lights, camera, action, let’s go! Brand new Neighbours is officially in production!” read the caption alongside an Instagram post from the show’s account.

In the accompanying images were cast members Alan Fletcher (as Karl Kennedy), Lucinda Cowden (as Melanie Pearson), Rebekah Elmaloglou (as Terese Willis), Stefan Dennis (as Paul Robinson) and Annie Jones (as Jane Harris).

The actors beamed as they got back to work, but not before sharing a champagne toast outside the fictional Lassiters Hotel.

Should all go to plan, Neighbours should be back on screens by the end of this year.

Georgie Stone (as Mackenzie Hargreaves) and Tim Kano (as Leo Tanaka) will also reprise their roles as series regulars, after the show was axed by Australia’s Network 10 last July.

Returning in guest roles are Ian Smith (as Harold Bishop), April Rose Pengilly (as Chloe Brennan), and Melissa Bell (as Lucy Robinson).
