Neighbours has been axed for good - after the production company failed to find the soap a new home.
Fremantle Media has reportedly resonated to the fact that another channel won't be able to pick up the show, with a formal announcement expected later in the week.
Show bosses are expected to say that after an "extensive search for alternative funding", they have failed to secure another channel to broadcast the Australian soap - which started the careers of the likes of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and many others.
A petition had been launched by fans of the soap, desperate to see it be picked up by another broadcaster after Channel 5 decided to pull the plug on the show after nearly four decades on our screens.
At the time, a spokesperson for Channel 5 confirmed the show would be ending, as they said in a statement: "Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer. It’s been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.
"We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years."
They added: "We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers."
Sources have revealed Fremantle Media have been "working tirelessly" to find a new home, but the show will end this summer.
"Fremantle have not commented on the situation since the news broke about Channel 5," a source told The Sun.
"They have been working tirelessly to secure funding from other networks but sadly they’ve been unable to save the soap. The announcement will confirm that the soap will end this summer and that they have been overwhelmed by the love and support from the audience since the news broke."
Fans of the soap will no doubt be devastated following the permanent axe, as they had started a petition in the hope that the show would be picked up by another channel here in the UK. At the time of writing, it has received over 60,000 signatures.
Jason Donovan was equally gutted about the news, writing on Twitter at the time: " @neighbours changed the Australian television landscape. It launched many careers over decades including mine. Engaged and entertained audiences for generations."
Like the fans he had hoped that the show would be picked up by someone else, writing in a message to fans last month: "Hoping that it will find a new home with another U.K. broadcaster and continue to provide opportunity and entertainment."
