Neighbour 'feud' over new porch extension leaves disabled woman 'suicidal'

A bitter feud between two neighbours over the size of a porch has left a disabled woman considering taking her own life.

Jennifer Copplestone Brown, 60, from Whitby says the next door extension is blocking light and their view and caused a leak which has damaged her lawn.

She claims her garden wall was knocked down by builders when the neighbours' new extension was built around 18 months ago.

Despite being told the wall would be replaced she says the wall has still not been built leaving a gaping gap around her garden.

She says Scarborough Council is at fault for passing the planning permission.

The 60-year-old, who is disabled, told YorkshireLive: "I can't believe how much distress it's causing us. I have thought about ending my life because of it all, I don't know where to turn.

“I'm so down with it all, I've been crying and I've tried everything. I've been put on diazepam and antidepressants by my doctors - I just don't know where to turn.

“Nobody came out to look at the plans when they were put through and the council are saying they haven't done anything wrong. They said they would put the wall back if they took it down."

“Nobody came out to survey it. I don't know how it passed planning permission, there is just no common sense. The council won't come out and have a look at what they have done."

"They had a leak underneath their extension - which they have said has been fixed - but our lawn is getting damaged because of the water.

“We have just had all the patio and grass redone and it's been ruined. My husband and his friend did a lot of work to make it nice.”

She said the extension has caused arguments between them and their neighbours to the point they no longer talk.

She added: “I had a lovely garden but now they have put an extension up. it's blocking light into my house and garden.

“I'm not sleeping, it's just always on my mind constantly."

Neighbour Lauren Winspear, 28, said: "I have written evidence and proof from the council planning and building regulations that this development is in no breach and that the case has been accepted for closure."

North Yorkshire Council’s area planning manager Nick Read said: “Out of respect for the privacy of landowners and complainants, we do not comment about alleged breaches of planning control unless a case proceeds to formal enforcement action.

“All complaints about alleged breaches of planning control are assessed and investigated as appropriate.”
