'Neighbour demanding I repaint my 'ugly' fence - he's 'horrified' by the colour'

A man has been left outraged after being ordered to repaint his fence because his neighbour doesn't agree with his colour choice. He explained how he wanted to spruce up his front garden ready for the summer months by repainting his 'neglected' fence.

But his neighbour is now threatening to call in the homeowners association (HOA) if he doesn't put it back to the way it was. Taking to Reddit, the man said: "I share a fence with a neighbour that until last week, was in my opinion, very ugly.

"It was white but the paint was peeling off and it didn't fit with the aesthetic of my house. I hired professionals to come in and repair the fence and paint my side green. The green part of the fence is impossible to see from my neighbour's house and shouldn't have bothered them - or so I thought."

But soon after having it painted, he woke up to an angry email from his neighbour ordering him to remove the green paint immediately.

"He said he was going on a walk when he saw the fence and that he was horrified.," he added.

"He said it looked very ugly and that he shouldn't have to see it every time he leaves his house. He told me the HOA would take action against me if I didn't immediately get the fence repainted.

"Since he's a very prominent (but not well liked) member of the HOA, I feel like he may be able to back up that threat.

"I don't want to re-paint the fence since he was so mean about it and I'd have to pay lots of money to repaint my fence again when I like how it looks already."

While most users agreed that he should have checked in with his neighbour before making any changes, others believe he should stick with the green considering he paid for the fence's upkeep.

One user said: "It's your fence and you can do whatever you want with it. It's not like you painted their entire house green as well."

Another user added: "It's not only your fence its his fence too. He has some rights over the fence. You should ask before painting."

A third user said: "unfortunately depending on the HOA's policies you may have to repaint it if he pushes the issue.

One more user added: "The fence shouldn’t have to look at him when he passes by for his walks - sounds like a very pretty fence."
