The next-door neighbor of Bryan Kohberger, the suspect arrested in the November murders of four University of Idaho students, said the incident damaged his sense of security.
Nephi Duff, who has lived since 2019 in Washington State University’s Steptoe Village Apartments, told CBS affiliate KREM that he believed he “was moving to a safe, small community,” but his feelings have changed.
“I just think if these things are happening right under my nose, how do I protect (my family)?” said Duff, a husband and father who lives in the unit beside Kohberger, 28.
While he did not remember seeing Kohberger around the apartment complex, Duff said he thought he might have seen a Hyundai Elantra apparently linked to the case.
“I may have seen the white Elantra, but there are probably a lot of white Elantras so I didn’t think it was the specific Elantra,” Duff said.
Kohberger is accused of having fatally stabbed Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin early on the morning of Nov. 13, while the four were asleep.
Kohberger, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in criminal justice at WSU, was arrested Friday morning in eastern Pennsylvania.
“We will long feel the loss of these young people in the Moscow-Pullman community and hope the announcement today will be a step toward healing,” said Washington State University chancellor Elizabeth Chilton.
