Negotiators In Cairo For Talks On Gaza Conflict Resolution

United Nations General Assembly expected to vote on ceasefire resolution amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, in New York

Negotiators have convened in Cairo, Egypt, for discussions aimed at bringing an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and securing the release of hostages. The talks involve delegations from both Hamas and Israel, with the goal of reaching a potential three-phase agreement proposed by US President Joe Biden.

Over the weekend, a Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo, while an Israeli delegation is expected to join the discussions shortly. However, there are still significant challenges to overcome before a final agreement can be reached.

One of the main points of contention is Hamas's dissatisfaction with the latest proposal, which does not include a permanent ceasefire and introduces new conditions for the exchange of prisoners, among other issues. The group has expressed reservations about the terms put forward by the US President.

On the other hand, Israel has emphasized that any break in the fighting following the initial six-week phase may not lead to a permanent ceasefire. The Israeli delegation has made it clear that they are not prepared to agree to a long-term cessation of hostilities at this stage.

The negotiations in Cairo are crucial in determining the future trajectory of the conflict in Gaza and the potential release of hostages. Both sides will need to engage in constructive dialogue and compromise in order to achieve a lasting resolution to the ongoing crisis.
