Columbia University administrators have reported progress in negotiations with pro-Palestinian protesters who have been occupying a campus lawn with an encampment. The university stated that discussions are ongoing as planned, with a small group of faculty, administrators, and University Senators engaging in dialogue with student organizers.
The focus of the talks is to address the dismantling of the encampment, dispersal of protesters, and adherence to University policies moving forward. Both parties have presented their respective demands for consideration.
Addressing rumors, the university clarified that the New York Police Department (NYPD) has not been called to campus, dismissing such claims as false.
Earlier this week, Columbia University set a deadline for protesters to dismantle their encampment by midnight, which was later extended by 48 hours following continued discussions. In the event that an agreement is not reached, the university has indicated that it may explore alternative options, a statement that some protesters have interpreted as a potential police intervention to clear the site.
