Negative Tas emissions 'envy of nation'

Tasmania has recorded net negative greenhouse gas emissions for seven consecutive years, a new report shows.

The Tasmanian Greenhouse Gas Emissions Report 2022, released on Wednesday, looked at emissions from goods and services produced in and exported from the island state between 1990 and 2020.

It found Tasmania's emissions dropped to -3.73 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2-e) in 2020.

That's a 120.9 per cent reduction from the 1990 baseline of 17.89 Mt CO2-e.

In 2020, Tasmania had lowest emissions per person in Australia, with each Tasmanian accounting for -6.6 tonnes of CO2-e compared to the national average of 19.4 tonnes of CO2-e.

The lower figures result from more renewable energy being used in the state and key sectors like the forestry industry removing large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere, the report said.

"Tasmania's emissions profile continues to be the envy of the nation and the world," the state's environment and climate change minister Roger Jaensch said on Wednesday in a statement.

"But modelling shows that as our economy and population grows, and the risk of severe bushfires increases, we need to continue to reduce emissions to maintain our net-zero status.

"The first step to reduce emissions is to know their source, and this report provides an important reference to guide our action on climate change."

Mr Jaensch last year tabled an amended climate change bill to the state parliament, which aims to legislate a net zero or lower emissions target from 2030 and a requirement for a statewide climate change risk assessment.
