'Needs to stop' - Paul Merson makes Marcelo Bielsa plea amid dismal Leeds United form

Former Arsenal and England star Paul Merson has gone on a passionate rant about the way Marcelo Bielsa continues to set up his Leeds United team, following a run of form which has seen the Whites pick up only one point in five games.

Leeds have conceded three goals or more in their last four fixtures, which has plunged the team back into relegation danger after they looked to be moving clear following a 3-2 victory over West Ham in January.

"At the moment this needs to stop - the rot," Merson said on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday, ahead of Leeds' lunchtime kick-off against Tottenham.

"The worrying thing for me was getting clapped of last Sunday.

"They’ve just been beat 4-2 by their arch enemies - their biggest game of the year - and they let in four goals and they’re getting clapped off.

"I don’t know. He’s [Bielsa] pulling the wool over people’s eyes. He needs to change.

"He’s got players out, I know he has. I know other teams have players out but the way Leeds, they’re important players.

"He has to change it. You can’t keep playing Man United and Liverpool and getting beat sixes and fours.

"You have to stop it. I worry for them, at the moment I really worry for them.

Merson suggested that the Leeds fans had a responsibility to their team to demand better and possibly force Bielsa to move away from his principles which have left them so open at the back.

"I think the fans have got to start getting a bit stronger. If I got beat by Tottenham four when I was playing for Arsenal, there’s no way we’re getting clapped off."

Jeff Stelling asked whether fans should be expected to be booing, instead and Merson replied:

"You don’t boo, but just go home.

"For me, they’ve worked so hard to get into this league but it’s fizzling away.

"I love watching Leeds. I have no affinity to them but I love watching them because I know there will be loads of goals either way. That’s not right!"
