Neco Williams almost scores Championship goal of the season as Fulham win again

Liverpool's Neco Williams has never scored a league goal in his career to date - but he almost scored a contender for goal of the season for loan club Fulham.

The 20-year-old played his part as the Cottagers picked up a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday lunchtime.

And he almost added his name to the score-sheet in spectacular style.

The Wales international tried his luck from just inside the Rovers half late on in the game. After a bursting run from his own box, Williams looked up and clearly spotted Thomas Kaminski off his line.

He then unleashed a superb attempt that beat the back-pedalling Kaminski only for it to rebound agonisingly off the crossbar.

Will Williams become a first-team regular at Liverpool? Let us know in the comments

Plenty of fans were dazzled by Williams' audacity.

One wrote: "There is no way we are gonna keep hold him after this loan spell. Fair play to the lad. Absolutely smashing it at Fulham."

Another wrote: "Oh my god Neco Williams, that was insane."

Thankfully for Williams, his near-miss didn't cost his temporary employers. They racked up a fifth win in their last six league games and a 22nd victory of the season to move ever closer to an instant Premier League return.

First half strikes from Neeskens Kebano and Harry Wilson did the damage as the Cottagers moved on to 73 points - 12 clear of third-placed Bournemouth ahead of the 3pm kick-offs.

Fulham boss Marco Silva said of the result: "It was a very good first half and I think we clearly deserved the three points. We were the best team on the pitch.

"And that first half was really good. The way we found the spaces, the way we created the gaps in some moments it was brilliant to be honest.

"We scored twice but we had some more chances to score as well. At half-time we didn't have much to change. It was important for us to start quick and strong second half.

"We had a chance with Fabio (Carvalho) off the bar but then they (Blackburn) reacted.

"We had a little lack of patience and we tried to rush things which we didn't need to do winning 2-0 at home.

"But overall we deserved the three points so congratulations to our players and the fans, who made a really good atmosphere.

"And with a clean sheet the feeling is even better."

Speaking after joining Fulham, Williams said: "I was excited and when the interest came in, I didn't really have a second thought about coming. I want to show everyone what I can do.

"The gaffer here uses attacking football which is perfect for me. The style of football suits me to a tee so it was a no-brainer.

"It's my first time out on loan. There's a lot of stuff that comes with it such as living in a new city. I'll hopefully get loads of different experiences."
