Neath valley care home coming to end of its operational life gets stay of execution

The future of a residential care home in Neath Port Talbot has been discussed this week. Trem Y Glyn residential care home in Glynneath currently provides residential care and support for people aged 65 and older, including those with dementia and other illnesses.

The home is managed by Welsh-based care group Pobl, on behalf of Neath Port Talbot Council, and while it has been accepted that the building will soon be at the end of its operational use, councillors decided its life should be extended until March, 2024.

The decision came after officers recommended the extension due to the pressure it could put on the local health and social care system if it closed, citing how: "The social care market continues to be unpredictable and unstable." Based at Rear Park Avenue in Glynneath, the home that was constructed in 1974, has had a number of refurbishments such as upgraded bedrooms and updated communal areas in recent years. Officers added to the recommendation by saying that if the extension wasn't granted it would be closed as soon as March, 2023, resulting in a number of pressures for the authority.

They said: "It was difficult to predict with accuracy what impact Trem Y Glyn closing could have on the ability for the council to appropriately react to these changes."

A council spokesperson added: "The current view of officers is that the social care market continues to be unpredictable and unstable. As such, officers feel that closing Trem Y Glyn at this point in time could put further pressure on the health and social care system. Furthermore, it is the view of officers that this position is likely to last for another 12 months.

"In light of the current market position in terms of stability and sufficiency, officers recommend that the director of social services is granted delegated authority to conclude negotiations with Pobl and enter into a Deed of Variation with Pobl, so that Trem Y Glyn can continue to operate until March 31, 2024."

Members of Neath Port Talbot Council’s social services, housing and community safety cabinet board were asked to consider three options for the home’s future, which included extending the use of the home until 2024, 2025, or closing it after March, 2023.

They decided to extend the use of Trem Y Glyn until 2024. Councillors will now have three days to submit a "call in" if they want cabinet to consider the issue again. You can read more of our stories from Neath Port Talbot here.
