Nearly 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russian invasion

Almost 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died since Russia's invasion, an aide of President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed.

Mykhailo Podolyak, who advises the Ukrainian President estimates that between 10,000 and 13,000 troops have lost their lives.

None of the two countries involved in the war give figures for the casualties of their respective countries and Mr Podolyak's remarks have not been confirmed by Ukraine.

Mr Podolyak said in June between 100 and 200 Ukrainian members of the military were dying daily.

Mark Milley, the most senior US general, last month said around 100,000 Russian and 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers had died or been hurt since the invasion of Ukraine began.

Ursula Von der Leyen, head EU Commission said 100,000 Ukrainian troops had been killed in a video address on Wednesday.

But the EU Commission later said this figure was a mistake and referred to those killed and injured.

Mr Podolyak said Kyiv was "openly talking about the number of the killed" on Ukranian TV channel Channel 24.

He said "We have official evaluations by the General Staff, official evaluations by the commander-in-chief [Mr Zelensky], and they range from 10,000 to 12,500-13,000 killed."

Civilians killed could, however, could be "significant" he added.

BBC News estimated there were 3,600 civilian deaths at mid-June, but the news outlet said this is likely to be 'much higher'.

Ms von der Leyen said 20,000 Ukrainian civilians had been killed.

This figure was removed from later versions of a video, plus the assertion 100,000 troops had been killed.

Mr Podolyak said up to 100,000 Russian soldiers had died since the invasion started on February 24.

And 100,000 to 150,000 had also been wounded, were missing or unable to return to combat.

The BBC's Russian Service reckon at least 9,311 Russian soldiers of all ranks have been killed since the war began but the true figure could be more than 18,600.

The Mirror reported in March The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) says 925 civilians have been killed and another 1,496 wounded in Ukraine.

Of these, 75 are believed to be children and these are the most recent figures posted by OHCHR on March 20.

The actual death count it was estimated is likely to be much higher than this.

In terms of soldier casualties, this figure is heavily disputed.

Both sides have an incentive to suggest that their figures are a particular number and it is widely believed, based on various reports, that the Kremlin has not posted the true death toll and casualty lists.

However, pro-Putin tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda briefly published a toll in which it cited the Russian Ministry of Defence as a source, saying that 9,861 Russian soldiers had been killed and 16,153 injured since the invasion of Ukraine.
