Neal Maupay sends Chelsea important message following Graham Potter appointment

Neal Maupay believes newly-appointed Chelsea manager Graham Potter needs to be afforded time if he is to become a success at Stamford Bridge.

Potter was hired last week following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel, with Todd Boehly and Chelsea's ownership group intent on implementing a long-term strategy at the club.

Having taken charge of Brighton in 2019, the Seagulls registered finishes of 15th and 16th during Potter's first two seasons at club before going on to win plaudits following last term's ninth-placed finish and an admirable start to the current campaign.

Maupay, who arrived at the AMEX Stadium shortly after Potter's appointment, spent three full seasons under the former 47-year-old's stewardship before leaving for Everton this summer. He claimed the club's continued progression suggests that the former Swansea and Östersunds boss will require patience to succeed in West London.

“He is a very good manager but he won’t change things overnight. He will need time," Maupay told the Telegraph. "Last season we finished ninth. But the season before that we finished 16th and we were only safe about three games before the end of the season.

"Football changes. Just because we were struggling yesterday doesn’t mean that tomorrow won’t be good. At Brighton we had two tough seasons and the third one was the good one. To build takes time.”

Following the postponement of Chelsea's clash against Liverpool, Potter will have to wait until October 1st to take charge of his first Premier League game in charge of the Blues when they make the short journey to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace.
